Diabetes symptoms
It’s estimated that many people with diabetes go undiagnosed for 5-10 years before receiving a medical diagnosis. Symptoms can develop over time so you may not recognise the signs. Symptoms of diabetes can include:
High blood pressure can be commonly associated with diabetes so you may be required to undertake regular blood pressure checks. If you suspect you’re presenting with diabetes symptoms, we’ll help you undertake a random blood glucose test. This measures your glucose levels and can be indicator if you are at risk of developing diabetes. Fasting isn’t required and involves a small finger prick to draw a drop of blood. We’ll have the results ready for you in a matter of minutes.
What is the National Diabetes Services Scheme?
The NDSS is an Australian Government initiative that’s administered by Diabetes Australia. Membership is free and available for all Australians living with diabetes. The NDSS functions to support people with medically diagnosed diabetes to access diabetes-related products at a reduced price. If you suffer from Type 1, Type 2 or Gestational diabetes, you’re eligible to receives discounted diabetic consumables from our North Haven Pharmacy.
If you aren’t a member of the NDSS, we can supply you with the forms to apply for membership. Your doctor will need to confirm you have been medically diagnosed with diabetes. Once we receive the forms fully completed, we’ll help you organise your membership.
Dealing with Diabetes
If you or your loved one has been diagnosed with diabetes, it’s understandable that you may feel scared or overwhelmed. At North Haven Pharmacy, we’re here to help you manage your diabetes and provide treatment options to suit you.
Type 1 diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin and results in low glucose levels. We need glucose for energy, so we need to manually provide insulin to the body with daily injections to maintain target glucose levels. At North Haven Pharmacy, we’ll teach you how to monitor your blood glucose levels and the value of maintaining healthy diet and exercise to manage your diabetes.
Type 2 is similar to Type 1, but far less serious. The pancreas provides reduced insulin levels but is unable to convert all the glucose into energy. Type 2 can be managed with regular exercise and a healthy diet. We’ll help monitor blood glucose to ensure you’re staying within the target range.
Managing gestational diabetes
During pregnancy, there is a higher demand for insulin production for the baby. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed when the body can’t cope with the demand, resulting in high blood glucose levels. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can help manage gestational diabetes along with monitoring your blood glucose levels. Our pharmacists in Camden Haven will help treat and manage gestational diabetes.
